Royse City ISD Security Department Makes History With Addition of Safety Dog
Much like the growing student body in Royse City ISD, the security department will welcome a new face to the team. After a year of planning and research, the district becomes the state’s first ISD security team to employ a trained weapons detection K-9 safety dog. Trained at Auburn University, a highly trained Vapor Wake® labrador retriever has been matched with RCISD Security Guard Zach Morales for this innovative and proactive new public safety measure. As a result of a partnership with Global K9’s Paws on Patrol Royse City ISD is proud to welcome “Wink” to the overall safety team.
Already a member of the RCISD Security Team, Officer Morales spent four weeks at Auburn University in training while being matched with Wink. He is a graduate of Royse City High School who later served in the US Army as a Military Working Dog Handler for more than 9 years. He shifts into this position from Bobby Summers Middle School where he was noted for both ensuring safety and security as well as building relationships with students.
On the new addition, Director of Safety & Security Troy Burke said, “Being proactive is a priority for our team and our district. We are so proud to bring this level of safety and expertise to our department. Officer Morales’ experience in the military with K9 units makes him the perfect fit for this partnership. Wink will be a huge part of the family at RCHS and in RCISD. Beyond the safety benefits of a Vapor Wake® trained dog, we know that animals can provide a great level of comfort to people. When she isn’t working at the school, I fully expect her to be spoiled by staff and students.”
The pair will primarily serve and protect Royse City High School. Vapor Wake® training equipped Wink with the ability to search the air and detect trace explosive odors to their source. Detection is non-disruptive and highly mobile as Wink and Officer Morales will move throughout the building. Plans are also in place for her to visit elementary and middle schools to make presentations to students as a learning opportunity. Additionally, the pair may be requested to assist local law enforcement agencies if needed.

About Vapor Wake®
Vapor Wake® detection is a highly advantageous method and system for detecting person-worn or concealed-carried explosives and firearms. With Vapor Wake®, both the canine and handler are trained and certified under the program. However, unlike other detection methods, the canine leads the handler. The primary function of the handler is to position the canine in the desired location while the canine searches the air. This unique nose-up ‘air scenting’ approach allows the canine to identify and follow vapor trails or scent pools of the target odor generated by both moving or stationary targets. When the canine detects a trained scent, the canine leads the handler to or follows behind the carrier of the item with the scent.
